Unilateral coronal synostosis (UCS) results in significant craniofacial asymmetry and is felt to involve primarily the frontal orbital regions, as well as maxilla and mandible. The purpose of this study was to quantify asymmetry of the craniofacial skeleton in patients with UCS and to assess the impact of anterior cranial vault reconstruction with frontal orbital advancement on the craniofacial skeleton. Thirty-nine patients with non-syndromic UCS with a mean age of 13.3 months underwent surgery. Three-dimensional CT images were utilized to determine asymmetry pre-operatively (T1), immediately post-operatively (T2), and at 1 year-follow up (T3). Paired samples t-test was employed to determine significance at p=0.05.Significant asymmetry exists at the frontal orbital level in patients with non-syndromic UCS. Surgery significantly improved symmetry and normalized subsequent craniofacial growth. This is the first investigation to quantitatively assess maxillary and mandibular development in UCS patients.
