This qualitative, life history inquiry with seven adolescent girls explores the gender dichotomy of the labels 'girly girl' and 'tomboy' and its impact on feelings towards the body. Of interest was how girls live between these labels, how they negotiate their identification with these labels, and how this has changed over time. Four themes emerged from this analysis: the External Construct of each of the labels---the description of the appearance and behaviours; the Internal Construct---interests and activities of either a tomboy or a girly girl and feelings of connection to themselves; the Consequences of identifying with each label in terms of fitting in with peers and messages received from others; and lastly the Transitions and Changes that occur with each label over time. This exploratory inquiry provides a unique lens through which to explore the impacts of negative body image on the development of adolescent girls.
