Britain, Nasser and the balance of power in the Middle East, 1952-1967

from the Egyptian revolution to the Six-Day War

The aim of this book is to examine British policy towards Turkey. 1959 was an important starting point for Anglo-Turkish relations due to the agreements of Zurich and London about Cyprus. These agreements contributed to the beginning of a new phase in close relations between the two countries. The revolution in Turkey and its aftermath, the transition from the Baghdad Pact to CENTO and the new dimensions of the Cyprus problem became important issues impacting on these bilateral relations. These issues are subject to close examination in this book, in the light of their relevance to modern Anglo-Turkish policy. With research based on newly-available Public Records Office archives, the author provides insight on British reactions to political events in Turkey and shows that in relation to the partition of Cyprus the crucial changes started as early as 1963, with Britain's indirect support.
