Edition Notes

Charles Erskine Scott Wood was born in Erie, Pennsylvania February 20, 1852. Wood graduated from West Point in 1874 and served as an infantry officer, fighting in the Nez Perce War in 1877, and was present at the surrender of Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce. Wood is the translator of Chief Joseph's famous speech: "I will fight no more forever." He became a prominent attorney in Portland, Oregon. Wood was a frequent contributor to Pacific Monthly magazine, and was a leader of Portland's literary community. He is the father of Nan Wood Honeyman, Oregon's first U. S. congresswoman. He died January 22, 1944 in Los Gatos, California. During his lifetime, he numbered among his friends Chief Joseph, Emma Goldman, Ansel Adams, Robinson Jeffers, Clarence Darrow, Childe Hassam, Margaret Sanger, and John Steinbeck.
