Colour plates opp. p. 281 and p. 300 previously appeared in The floral world (the former in Sept. 1868; the latter in Jan. 1869).

Plates [3], [4] and [5] are with the same imagery as plates [1], [3] and [7] in an edition of this title published in 1856 by Groombridge and Sons. Some wood-engraved illustrations within the text are also the same as those used in this edition. See McLean D 0524.

"The first edition ... was published on the 1st. of February, 1856 ... The second edition was published on the 10th. of June, 1857 ... Very shortly after the publication of the second edition, an American edition appeared ... without the author's permission ... under the title of `Flowers for the Parlour and the Garden' ... "--Preface.
