Edition Notes

Verse in sixty-three stanzas; first line: John Gilpin was a citizen

Attributed to William Cowper in the Dictionary of national biography, where it is noted that the poem was composed by Cowper and sent to William C. Unwin in November 1782, and subsequently published in the Public advertiser. In 1785 it was read by the actor, John Henderson, and became a highly popular broadside ballad, one bookseller reportedly selling 6,000 copies

This edition was probably printed in 1786, for in 1787 both Aitken and Pritchard entered into partnerships, their imprints reading, respectively, R. Aitken & Son, and Pritchard & Hall
