The words were probably selected by Sir Christopher Hatton, who may have been the author of some of them. The identified lyrics and sonnets are by Joshua Sylvester, Edmund Spenser, Walter Raleigh, and one is attributed to John Donne.

Includes reduction for pianoforte, originally "apt for viols and voyces."
