Edition Notes
"[Giovanni's] madrigals did not compare with his sacred works, for only in the latter was there the greatest appropriateness of his pure style to the ideas which he expressed. His music illustrated the meaning of the text in detail, and it was necessary for his music to remain so simple that the words might be understood. The lines are always vocally grateful and molded melodically to their most perfect form. Harmony is sublimely restricted to use of the pure triad. In the form every element of the content is used to its fullest possibility without forcing; rhythm is simple, permitting clarity." -Copyright 1962, Harold Flammer, Inc.
