First Sentence

"THERE is no department of inquiry possible to the mind of man which is not encircled with a belt of mystery by the Unknown World, and at the same time the human mind, wheresoever it is at work, is always exploring and invading this world of the unknown; the belt of mystery is continually receding before the persistence of intellectual adventure; and even in the remotest paths, where most men shrink from penetrating, the voices of a few daring pioneers are crying to us in the darkness, encouraging us to advance intrepidly, for there is firm ground before them, and they descry light in the distance."
