Faire de la sociologie une science, tel était le souhait de Durkheim lorsqu'il publie en 1894 cet ouvrage dans la Revue philosophique. Il a foi dans le rationalisme scientifique appliqué aux phénomènes sociaux et la sociologie a pour vocation d'établir des lois de la vie sociale comme il existe des lois de la nature. Dans une introduction inédite, François Dubet explique l'argument de Durkheim, ses lignes de forces mais aussi les quelques aspects plus criticables, plus d'un siècle après la publication du lirve.
