Having had its beginning in 1912 with the Edison Company's release of a series of films titled What Happened to Mary? (which was just that - a series rather than a serial - but with a continuing main character and general story line), the serial as a form of motion picture entertainment began to take shape as it would eventually be during the period from 1913 to 1915.
