She received her master's degree in secondary education from Louisiana State University in New Orleans and her Ph.D from the University of Alabama.
Jane Self has been an avid supporter of civil and equal rights for most of her adult life as well as an advocate for justice. She was a board member of the Alabama Civil Liberties Union for eight years.
