"This is a critical examination of Friedkin's work, beginning with his television documentary days in Chicago in 1955 through his latest feature film, The Guardian (1990). Interviews and biographical information are used to take us from one project to the next, thereby discussing the background, circumstances and sources of each project. However, the focus is always the analysis of the films themselves. Therefore, chapters are devoted to each specific film chronologically to examine more clearly Friedkin's filmic progress by exploring the genesis and influences of the project as well as examining the film itself aesthetically, dramatically and thematically."--Introduction, p. xi.

Work Description

"This study of Friedkin's films, which is based on nearly 100 interviews with the director and his colleagues, pays particular attention to the evolution of his cinematic style and choice of subject material. New to the second edition, in addition to many small changes and updates of the book's existing material, are three chapters covering the last five years of Friedkin's work - which includes the much-publicized re-release of his director's cut of The Exorcist."--BOOK JACKET.
