"Fidel Castro steps down from power in exchange for a commitment from the United States to recognize Cuba and lift the trade embargo. Diplomatic recognition, in turn, is conditioned upon free elections.".

"Meanwhile, a mysterious elderly stranger, based in the Sierra Maestra mountains from which Castro launched his revolution forty years before, appears in rural towns around Cuba, quietly advocating a new kind of politics he calls "the true republic." Old-timers begin to suspect that the stranger, who calls himself Ernesto Blanco, may actually be the martyr Ernesto "Che" Guevara, who somehow survived the CIA and Bolivian government's assassination attempt in 1967.".

"Two traditional political parties are formed in Cuba; one is a successor to the Communist Party and the other is composed of U.S backed Cuban exiles. As the different and inspiring true republic movement spreads like wildfire throughout Cuba, the other two factions devise plots to get rid of Ernesto Blanco - by murder if necessary.".

"American television news reporter Victoria Savidge sets out to score an interview with the elusive Blanco and finds herself not only swept up in the revolution but also falling in love with the charismatic reformer. As the old-line parties scheme to crush Blanco's populist revolution once and for all, I, Che Guevara culminates in a frantic last-minute run-up to the election in which assassins from both sides threaten mayhem."--BOOK JACKET.

Work Description

In Cuba, Castro has finally relinquished power. . . . now a mysterious exile (Che Guevara?) returns to finish the revolution. When a strange man appears in rural towns around Cuba quietly advocating a new kind of politics he calls "the True Republic," old-timers begin to suspect that the elderly stranger, who calls himself Ernesto Blanco, may actually be the martyr Ernesto "Che" Guevara. Shortly after Blanco's appearance, Fidel Castro steps down from power in exchange for a commitment from the United States to recognize Cuba and lift the crippling embargo. Two traditional parties quickly form: one is a successor to the Communist Party and the other is composed of U.S. and Mafia-backed Cuban exiles. As the True Republic movement spreads like wildfire throughout Cuba, each faction devises a plot to get rid of Ernesto Blanco — by assassination if necessary.
