"Traditionally, geotechnical engineers have been responsible for (1) investigating subsurface conditions; (2) designing foundations for roads, buildings, machines, storage tanks, and offshore structures; (3) designing earthworks for dams, levees, roads, tunnels, and underground structures; and (4) investigating land-mass problems such as landslides, slope stability, and subsidence (Taylor, 1948; Terzaghi and Peck, 1948; Lambe and Whitman, 1969; Peck et al., 1974)."
