The descendants of James Hinds (b. 1613, Bedfordshire, England) who emigrated from England, landing first at Salem, Mass. as early as 1637. There he married Mary Knight (also English) in 1638. Soon after their marriage, James and Mary removed to Southold, NY on the north fork at the eastern end of Long Island. James died in 1652. His widow married Ralph Dayton of Southold. Ralph and Mary were early settlers of East Hampton, NY on the south fork of Long Island.
