Note on authorship: These “Lettres portugaises” were originally published as having been written by an unknown author in Portuguese and translated into French, also by an unknown translator. Eventually, they came to be ascribed to Sister Marianna Alcoforado, and countless editions were published throughout the centuries under her name. More recent scholarship, however, has considered more plausible that the letters were written by Gabriel de Guilleragues in French, and increasingly new editions are attributed to him. The authorship question is not settled, and new editions continue to be published attributing the letters to Sister Mariana as well.

Edition Notes
Bibliography of English translations: p. [45-[54]
Translation of Lettres portugaises.
The letters, first attributed to M. Alcoforado, are now ascribed to Guilleragues.
Title in red and black.
"This first edition on Van Gelder paper consists of 925 copies.
"Mr. Prestage's version of the Letters of a Portuguese nun was originally issued in 1893, in an edition limited to 500 small and 50 large paper copies. This editio princeps comprised--in adition to Mr. Prestage's English version, introduction and bibliography--an absolutely faithful reprint of an English metrical version of 1713, of which only one copy is known to exist. The whole, exquisitely printed at the Constable press in red and black, will never be reproduced in the same form and completeness."
"The second edition revised and with introduction brought up to date--ommitting the French text and the English version of 1713--came out in 1897 (London: D. Nutt), and is preferably here reprinted, as the édition définitif [!]"
The order of the letters is changed, the 2d and 4th being interchanged.
