The 108th Infantry Regiment was recruited and organized in Rochester and mustered into Federal service on Aug 16-18th 1862. John Williams was authorized on July 10, 1862 as Colonel, to recruit the regiment in Monroe County, NY. One month later on September 17, 1862 they marched into history against 4 North Carolina regiments at the sunken road. The 108th participated in more than 45 engagements ending with the Army of Northern Virginia's surrender at Appomattox Court House in April, 1865. This epic journey is Private George H Washburns' personal account.
