First edition, Sept. 1887; 2d ed. March, 1891; reissued June, 1891; March, 1894; Sept. 1896.
The first supplement, "A reader's guide to contemporary literature", bringing the work down to 1894, was published in 1895. The two volumes, revised and brought down to date will be reissued in one volume in 1905.
