"The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna is the English translation of the Sri Sri Ramakrishna Kathamrita, the conversations of Sri Ramakrishna with his disciples, devotees, and visitors, recorded by Mahendranath Gupta, who wrote the book under the pseudonym of "M." The conversations in Bengali fill five volumes, the first of which was published in 1897 and the last shortly after M.'s death in 1932. Sri Ramakrishna Math, Madras, has published in two volumes an English translation of selected chapters from the monumental Bengali work. I have consulted these while preparing my translation."

Work Description

Selections from the Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna: Annotated & Explained (SkyLight Paths Publishing, 2002) is an anthology of excerpts from the lengthy 1942 standard edition translated from Bengali into English by Swami Nikhilananda. The selections are on facing pages with annotations on aspects of the text that newcomers to Ramakrishna might need explained (e.g., foreign terms, religious and philosophical concepts). The selections were made and the annotations written by Kendra Crossen Burroughs (a book editor with a specialty in Eastern religion) with the approval of Swami Adiswarananda, then head of the Ramakrishna-Vivekananda Center of New York. The passages were chosen to highlight the best-known stories and most representative aspects of Sri Ramakrishna's life and teachings. The foreword is by Andrew Harvey, the series editor. This book makes a nice introduction to one of the greatest spiritual figures of the modern world.
