"An essay on woman" was probably written by Wilkes & Thomas Potter; cf. A. Hamilton, The infamous Essay on woman (1972), p. 188-189.

The copy-text of this edition appears to be the Dyce copy, in the Victoria and Albert museum; that copy is not, however, as here claimed, a copy of the first edition, of which no copy seems to have survived. Cf. H.S. Ashbee, Index librorum prohibitorum (1877-1885) I, 198-231.

"An essay on woman. By Pego Borewell, esq. With notes by Rogerus Cunaeus, Vigerus Mutoniatus, &c., and a commentary by the Rev. Dr. Warburton. Inscribed to Miss Fanny Murray ... Ex archetypo saepe in femoralibus reverendissimi Georgi Stone, Hiberniae primatis, saepius in podice intrepidi herois Georgii Sackville" (p. [1]-53) has special t.-p., printed, with some additions & emendations, from the t.-p. of the Dyce copy.

The editorship of this edition is sometimes erroneously ascribed to Ashbee.

Contains obscene parodies of Pope's "Essay on man", "The universal prayer", "The dying Christian to his soul" & his parphrase of Veni Creator, by Venantius Fortunatus.
