An edition of Call To Greatness (1954)

Call to Greatness

Books by political figures strategically released at the outset of a campaign are intended to elicit support. This may be the most effective such book in recent American history. Faced with a probably unwinnable race against Dwight Eisenhower, a General fresh off the WW2 victory who was courted by both major parties, Sevenson forged ahead with a book that served as a pitch to Republicans as well as those already agreeing with him. Facing claims that his side was "soft on communism", in this book he kicks communism up one wall and down the other. Later under Kennedy, he served as a strong US Ambassador to the UN and was known to even claim that Democrats were the "true conservatives" of the US political scene. A clever debate opponent, this book allows his abilities to be seen clearly from this very different time.
