But for Southern Illinois University Press, this book would have been lost. It's a gripping noir novel told in a style reminiscent of James M. Cain. Grisly violence marks a few passages; otherwise, the action is menacing but subdued. A dark, memorable story from a distant place and time told in long-past vernacular.
