Selected editorial cartoons from Boye Gbenro's portfolio

First series, 1985

This is the Foreword to this book written in 1985, by Dr. Doyin Abiola who was the Editor-In-Chief, Concord group of Newspapers:

There are three basic considerations for the apprasial of cartooning, namely: the cartoonist, his time and work. Collin Caket in Drawing Cartoons observes that the primary job of a cartoonist is perhaps to open people's eyes to the humour around them. Boye Gbenro has proved to be a young artist of trememndous talent who uses humour to chastise the foibles of the Nigerian ruling class, elites, working-class, and society.
This edition of his Selected Editorial Cartoons, in fact, proves this point. But Boye's tacit messages through his cartoons have become uniquely his style.
In fact, Nigerian readers are beginning to rely on his cartoons for for their needs at a period of fettered journalism in Nigeria. Boye has effectively used the art of cartooning to say graphically what hundreds of written pages cannot say. Boye has captured the essence of his time, namely: providing commentary on the activities of government and the governed. The selected editorial cartoons shows the work of a cartoonist whose time has come.
