Social comedy of a high order, together with romance and the first death in the series. Characters from Thirkell's previous novels are present, as well descendants of Trollope's books, such as Mr Bounce, grandson of Bunce the bedesman, who caused all that misery in The Warden. As old people slide out of the picture, young hearts merge and rejoice in each other after twenty years of silence.
