Edition Notes
Reissue. Originally published semi-weekly, London: J. Payne and J. Bouquet, 1749/50-1752. Of the 208 numbers, all were by Johnson except no. 10, by Hester Mulso, afterward Mrs. Chapone; no. 15 (2nd letter) by David Garrick; no. 30, by Catherine Talbot; no. 97, by Samuel Richardson; no. 44 and 100, by Elizabeth Carter; and no. 107 by Joseph Simpson, "a young lawyer of Lincoln's Inn." Cf. Fleeman.
The imprint is false. According to Fleeman, this is a pirated reprint of Fleeman 50.3R/31a (Edinburgh: Alex Chapman) with new preliminaries. "The names of respectable London booksellers enhance the piratical nature of this Edinburgh production."--Fleeman.
