This is the prologue to Walton's great London Polyglot Bible (or to give it its full title: Biblia sacra polyglotta: complectentia textus originales, hebraicum, cumpentateucho samaritano, chaldaicum, graecum: versionumque antiquarum, samaritanae, graecae, vulg.lat. quicquid comparari poterat), which was published from 1653 to 1657. The prologue was published last, but subscribers were encouraged not to bind the first volume until they got it. The London Polyglot had columns giving the text and variant texts in nine different languages: Hebrew, Greek, Latin, Aramaic, Syriac, Arabic, Ethiopic, Samaritan and Persian, with Latin translations of the non-Latin languages. In 2001, the Prolegamena was still supposed to be the best introduction to the world of polyglot biblical research.
