Illustrations copied partly from the miniatures in a ms. held by the Bibliothèque royale and originally executed for Lodewijk van Brugge, heer van Gruuthuse (ca. 1427-1492), and partly from other sources. Intended to accompany W. Smith's 1844 edition of the text of Froissart's Chronicles. A companion volume was published in 1844 under the title: "Illuminated illustrations of Froissart, selected from the ms. in the British Museum." The two series of plates were also used to illustrate the 1855 reissue of the Froissart text published in 1855 in London by H.G. Bohn. In the 1855 reissue, the plates were bound in at the appropriate points in Froissart's text. Cf. "Advertisement", p. [1]-2; British Museum Catalogue.
