Edition Notes

Edition: Each book is signed by the author and the artist: two hundred and fifty numbered 1 to 250, thirty artist's proofs numbered I to XXX, and twenty Hors Commerce individually dedicated. This copy 198/250.

Printed: Hand-printed by Fequet and Baudier in Paris.

Contents: Five short prose pieces by Samuel Beckett, selected by Jasper Johns from the original eight included in 'Pour finir encore et autres foirades'. Translated by Beckett from his original French in 1974 for this edition. The book is divided into five chapters, each in French and English.

Printing: Set in Caslon Old Face 16 pt.

Illustrations: Twenty-six lift-ground aquatints, five etchings with mixed media, one soft-ground etching and one aquatint, by Jasper Johns. Each chapter is preceded by an etched numeral. The two end-leaves are original lithographs by Johns, one in cross-hatch pattern and the other taken directly from Untitled (1972). The etchings were proofed and printed by hand at the Atelier Crommelynch in Paris in 1975 and 1976.

Paper: Handmade by Richard de Bas in the Auvergne, and watermarked with the initials of Samuel Beckett and the signature of Jasper Johns.

Bound in handmade paper by Rudolf Rieser in Cologne. In a publisher's beige linen-covered box with a purple tassel, lined with coloured lithograph in cross-hatch pattern by Jasper Johns.

Rare Book copy: No. 15 of the Hors Commerce copies.

In French and English; English follows French within each chapter.
