Bilbo Beutlin, ein angesehener Hobbit, läßt sich in ein Abenteuer verwickeln, das Hobbitvorstellungen bei weitem übersteigt. Nicht nur, daß er sich auf eine Reise von Jahresdauer begibt, er läßt sich sogar vom Zwergenkönig Thorin Eichenschild und seinen Genossen als Meisterdieb unter Vertrag nehmen und verpflichtet sich, den Zwergen bei der Rückgewinnung ihres geraubten Schatzes zu helfen.
Sein Ruf ist dann auch so ziemlich beim Teufel, als er nach erfolgreich bestandenen Abenteuern wieder in Hobbingen ankommt. Seine Erfahrungen mit dem Zauberer, den Zwergen, den Elben, Riesenspinnen und Menschen werden hier beschrieben.
