Jacques Cazotte, geboren am 17. Oktober 1719 in Dijon, ist am 25. September 1792 in Paris guillotiniert worden. Mit seinem kleinen Roman "Der verliebte Teufel" wird die Gattung der phantastischen Literatur im romanischen Sprachraum erst eigentlich begründet. In der sogenannten Schwarzen Romantik, vor allem durch E.T.A. Hoffmann, fand sie auch in Deutschland viele Nachfolger. Erzählt wird die Geschichte von Don Alvarez de Meravilla, dem Sohn einer spanischen Landadelsfamilie. Vor der unheimlichen Kulisse der Ruinen bei Portici ruft er den Beelzebub herbei, der ihm zunächst als scheußlicher Kamelkopf, vom unerschrockenen Alvarez zurückgewiesen aber, als blondes Hündchen Biondetto, dann als Page erscheint, ein Festmahl auftischt und später im Quartier seines Herrn sich als liebliches Mädchen erweist. alvarez vermag das Geschöpf nicht mehr los zu werden. Als er schließlich mit ihr vor den Treualtar treten will, gerät der Teufel in eine prekäre Situation.

Work Description

The Devil in Love (French: Le Diable amoureux, 1772) is an occult romance by Jacques Cazotte which tells of a demon, or devil, who falls in love with a young Spanish nobleman named Don Alvaro, an amateur human dabbler, and attempts, in the guise of a young woman, to win his affections.

French critic P.G. Castex has described The Devil In Love as "the very initiator of the modern fantasy story".

Canadian critic Carlo Testa has described The Devil In Love (in review of Stephen Sartarelli's 1993 translation) as a "terminus a quo" in the history of the demonic subgenre".

The Le Diable amoureux started a literary style known as fantastique, where surreal events intrude on reality and the reader is left guessing whether the events actually occurred or were merely the product of the character's imagination.
