The Plan de Iguala, dated February 24, 1821, was an appeal by Augustín de Iturbide calling for an independent Mexico ruled either by a European prince or a Mexican, the continuation of the Roman Catholic Church and the military, equal rights for Mexicans and those of Spanish ancestry, and elimination of property confiscations. The anonymous author fears that the plan of maintaining Catholicism as the sole religion will be impossible in the face of Freemasonry, the circulation of anti-Catholic books, and the rise of Protestant theology and doctrine.
