Morris, the son of Mr & Mrs Makura has Chemedzai betrothed to him according to the Shona custom of Kuzvarira in early boyhood. The relationship seems to work until Morris has acquired a good standard of education and leaves to work in town. Once he has experienced the smart life in Sailsbury (now Harare) he decided to divorce Chemedzai against his father's wishes and takes Sabina, a woman of double standards, for a wife.
Eventually Sabina murders Chemedzai. This brings the whole of Morris's family into unspeakable trouble.
