Die Banditen ist eine vergleichende Geschichte und Soziologie berühmter Bandenführer, die einerseits als wirkliche historische Figuren, andrerseits als Helden von Balladen, Geschichten und Mythen ganze Länder immer wieder in Schrecken versetzt haben, zugleich aber von unterdrückten Schichten oft als Wohltäter begrüßt wurden, auf jeden Fall die Menschen stets fasziniert und ihre Phantasie angeregt haben. E. J. Hobsbawm hat dieses Thema so behandelt, daß sich seine Studie selbst wie eine große Banditenlegende liest, deren Held immer wieder eine andere Gestalt annimmt, vom großen Rächer, edlen Räuber und Enteigner bis zum Freiheitskämpfer und Revolutionär.
