Informado de esta expedición, Lautaro, líder militar de la huestes mapuches, y ex paje del propio Valdivia, prepara a sus hombres para el inminente enfrentamiento. Conocedor de las capacidades bélicas de los españoles, tratará de sacar partido a su conocimiento del terreno y al factor sorpresa.
