An edition of The Glorious Revolution (2000)

The Glorious Revolution

"The Glorious Revolution is the most radical reassessment to date of the origins, circumstances and impact of the Revolution of 1688-89. Eveline Cruickshanks argues that James II was a revolutionary king who granted complete religious toleration because he believed it was morally right. This led to strong Tory opposition and induced William of Orange, husband of Mary, James's eldest daughter, to intervene.

The religious and political conflicts of James II's reign gave William of Orange and the Dutch States an opportunity to mount an international coalition, and to invade England in November 1688 with an army twice the size of James II's and a navy more powerful than the Spanish Armada in 1588. Deceit about William's designs on the Crown and treachery on the part of prominent noblemen and army officers made the attempt succeed.".

"This is the only single work to cover Scotland and Ireland - where the impact of the Revolution was great, and led to the Union with Scotland in 1707 and the Irish Wars, leaving problems that are still unresolved today."--BOOK JACKET.
