At head of title: Public documents--no. 1.
The first work, a remonstrance against the appointment of Samuel Bishop as Collector of New Haven, was published July 27, 1801, in the Connecticut courant and other newspapers. Although signed by J. Atwater and others, it has been attributed to Noah Webster, Cf. A bibl. of the writings of Noah Webster / E.E. Skeel. 1958. p. 522-523.
The remonstrance is addressed to President Jefferson, whose reply dated July 12, 1801, is also included. This is followed by the "exposition," an attack on the remonstrants in a letter by Abraham Bishop published in the Sun of liberty, Sept. 9, 1801.
"To the public" (p. 24) signed: Peter Porcupine [i.e. William Cobbett, publisher/compiler]
