Jean-Philippe Toussaint

Jean-Philippe Toussaint, né le 29 novembre 1957 à Bruxelles, est un écrivain et réalisateur belge de langue française.

Jean-Philippe Toussaint est l'auteur de romans qui se caractérisent par un style et un récit minimalistes, dans lesquels les personnages et les choses n'ont d'autre signification qu'eux-mêmes. Le premier livre de Toussaint, Échecs, est écrit entre 1979 et 1983. Il ne fut jamais publié en édition papier2, mais fait l'objet d'une édition numérique le 1er mars 2012, avec une préface de Laurent Demoulin intitulée Échecs ou le dynamisme romanesque des puissances immobiles3. Jean-Philippe Toussaint obtient en 1986 le prix littéraire de la Vocation pour son premier roman publié La Salle de bain. Il est lauréat de la Villa Kujoyama en 1996.

En 2002, il commence « Le Cycle de Marie », intitulé Marie Madeleine Marguerite de Montalte4,5, en quatre volets : Faire l'amour en 2002 ; Fuir en 2005, qui obtient le prix Médicis du roman français la même année ; La Vérité sur Marie en 2009, qui obtient quant à lui le Prix Décembre en 2009 et le prix triennal du roman, décerné par la Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles, en 20136 ; et le quatrième volet Nue, en 2013. Il adapte en 2016 pour le théâtre ce cycle littéraire dans un spectacle mixte mêlant lectures, vidéos et musiques originales composées et jouées sur scène par The Delano Orchestra7 puis fait paraître en octobre 2017 en un seul volume, intitulé M.M.M.M., l'ensemble du cycle8.

En 2014, il succède à Henry Bauchau au fauteuil 9 de l’Académie royale de langue et de littérature françaises de Belgique9 (ARLLFB).

Ses romans sont traduits en plus de vingt langues10.
