Minli vit au pied de la Montagne stérile. Ses parents travaillent dur du matin jusqu'au soir; pourtant, ils sont très pauvres et peinent à se nourrir. Le soir, la petite fille s'évade de cette dure existence grâce aux contes merveilleux que lui raconte son père. Des histoires où il est question d'un vieil homme qui aurait le pouvoir de changer la destinée des gens. Un jour, prenant son courage à deux mains, Minli part à la recherche du vieil homme, la seule personne capable d'apporter la fortune à sa famille. Elle croisera un dragon qui décide de l'accompagner dans son périple. Commence alors pour la petite Minli et son ami dragon un long voyage émaillé de curieuses rencontres. Chacune d'elles est l'occasion pour Minli d'entendre un récit fabuleux, sorte d'indice pour avancer dans la bonne direction, et découvrir où se trouve le vieil homme mystérieux.
