This book sets out to show how the several books came to their present form, and to examine the literary and historical problems which the study of them raises. And since the purpose of all such study is to throw light upon the meaning of the books, it offers, not so much an analysis of what each contains, but a brief exposition of its permanent value and of its message for us today. - Preface.
