"For this volume of Teller's tales, I have selected the 'Shipwrecked orphans, a true narrative of the sufferings of John Ireland' ... The narrative was written by one of the orphans, John Ireland, and I give it to you in nearly his own words, having made but few alterations in the style in which he tells the story of their sufferings."--To my young readers, title page verso, signed by Thomas Teller, and dated at Roseville Hall, 1845. Edited by George Tuttle (i.e., "Thomas Teller").

Cover title, statement of responsibility, and imprint statement vary: The Shipwrecked orphans: a true narrative of four years' sufferings. Edited by Thomas Teller. Embellished with new and beautiful engravings. New Haven. Published by S. Babcock. Chapel Street.

Variant states noted; one state issued in stiff-paper cover printed in green ink. Bears an advertisement on lower cover for Teller's tales, "a series of twelve new and beautiful juvenile books." Another state issued in stiff-paper cover printed in black ink. Lower cover advertisement includes the series list for Teller's tales. Advertisement also bears a pictorial wood-engraved border signed by E. Purcell (i.e., Edward B. Purcell?). Advertisement gives Babcock's address at 121 Chapel St.

Pagination includes [8] leaves of wood-engraved plates.

Title page wood engraving signed by Benson John Lossing.

Sidney Babcock published at 121 Chapel St., New Haven between 1841 and 1861. One copy in hand bears an inscription dated 1848.

Boston Public Library (Jordan Collection) copy bound in tan printed pictorial paper wrapper. Printed on wove papers. Housed in protective archival envelope. Markings in pencil on page [2] of wrapper. Front flyleaf includes second-hand price in pencil script at head, and a drawing (of a sailboat) in pencil at the tail; flyleaf verso includes autographed presentation inscription, dated April 16, 1856, in pencil script at head. Title vignette hand-coloured. Some markings and drawings in pencil throughout. Illustrations hand-coloured.
