English trannslation of French edition, Construire La Pente
In Los Angeles during the 1920s the framework of architectural theory changed. New rules had to be invented to build
on the hillsides. This study is a survey and analysis of the design methods and construction techniques used by the principal
figures of the modern movement in Southern California for difficult sloping canyon and hillside sites. Architects whose
works are shown and discussed include Wright, Schindler, Neutra, Lautner, Koenig, Ellwood and many others.

Dominique Rouillard, an architect with a doctorate in art history, is professor at the School of Architecture of the
University of Lille, France.
