La épica historia de Catherine y Heathcliff, situada en los sombríos y desolados páramos de Yorkshire, constituye una asombrosa visión metafísica del destino, la obsesión, la pasión y la venganza. Publicada por primera vez en 1847, un año antes de morir su autora, esta obra rompía por completo con los cánones del ”decoro” que la Inglaterra victoriana exigía a toda novela -tanto en el tema escogido como en la descripción de los personajes- y con la conducción autor-lector impuesta por las obras serializadas. Diversas extrañas la calificaron de ”burda, desagradable y alarmante”, pero en ningún momento se dudó de la singularidad de su estructura narrativa y de la fuerza de su lenguaje. Son estos valores los que con posterioridad crearon escuela y convirtieron la novela de Emily Brönte en una de las obras maestras de la literatura universal.

Work Description

Wuthering Heights is an 1847 novel by Emily Brontë, initially published under the pseudonym Ellis Bell. It concerns two families of the landed gentry living on the West Yorkshire moors, the Earnshaws and the Lintons, and their turbulent relationships with Earnshaw's adopted son, Heathcliff. The novel was influenced by Romanticism and Gothic fiction.
