Edition Notes
Includes bibliographical references.
The character and the first poem are in Latin, with English translation.
"The Latin character and poem are printed from a manuscript formerly owned by Jonathan Swift and endorsed by him 'Mr. Domvile/57/Account of/the K. of Sweden/about an. 1709.' The manuscript is now in the Henry E. Huntington Library ... (Ms. HM 14366) ... The Latin poem is ... evidently by a different (and less sympathetic) author and must postdate the Battle of Poltava (28 June 1709, Swedish style). So far as we are aware, it is printed here for the first time. The English translations were prepared for this edition. Susana Centlivre's Epistle to the King of Sweden was first published (anonymously) in London in 1717. It is here reprinted from a copy in the Huntington Library (99249)"--P. [29]
