Edition Notes
Holograph, signed.
Sarah Pugh presumably wrote this letter to Maria Weston Chapman. Sarah Pugh is unable to send "the missing number of 'Sartain' to complete your vol. But by far the most important of it to us, the 'Year at Ableside,' these sheets will enable you to complete in your mind;---the 'Year'---so full of interest to those who love & reverence Miss Martineau as we do." Sarah Pugh has heard from Mrs. Michell that she and Mary Estlin have been to Ableside, but Miss Martineau was too feeble to see even Mary. Sarah Pugh asks if the "Westminster article" [which was printed in the Liberator] is by Miss Martineau. She laments that "neither Italian air, nor Swiss mountains" can cure Mary Estlin's "tormenting headaches." Sarah Pugh writes of two exhilarating evenings with Wendell Phillips.
In the postscript on page four of this manuscript, Sarah Pugh writes that she received a letter from Harriet Lupton, who gives news about Leeds.
