Edition Notes

Holograph, signed.

Not knowing when Deborah Weston would arrive, Anne kept tea waiting for her on Saturday night. Anne tells about visits made and visitors received. In regard to the report of Mrs. Maria Weston Chapman for the Boston Female Anti-Slavery Society, "Mary Parker is acting very weakly & the rest very wickedly." She asks if Deborah can make some arrangements in New Bedford for the sale of the report. Richard Hildreth was here, "disputing as usual." She ends the letter with: "Alas poor Lovejoy! There is great feeling among the brethren." [The abolitionist, Elijah Parish Lovejoy was killed in an attack in Alton, Illinois, on Nov. 7, 1837.]
