"This monograph presents the main results of an interdisciplinary project on the history of marine fisheries in the White and Barents Seas. Studies of historical documents from the collections of the northern monasteries and governmental bodies, local press archives and the scientific literature revealed data on the size of catches and fishing effort, which allowed reconstruction of the population dynamics of important commercial fishes of the Russian North such as Atlantic salmon, White Sea herring and Atlantic cod. Description and analysis of the quantitative data, most of which appear here for the first time in the scientific literature, are given in the general context of the history of marine fisheries of the Russian North spanning several centuries. The book will be useful for historians, ecologists, fishery biologists as well as those who are interested in the history of the Russian North. Research was carried out within the framework of the international program 'History of Marine Animal Populations' (HMAP), which is part of a global long-term project 'Census of Marine Life'--Summary on p. [219].
