Work Description
Second in the series, but the first to introduce the Abbey itself. A ruined Cistercian abbey with the buildings the monks lived in almost completely preserved, but nothing left of the church. Although the action of the book is set near to Wycombe, to tie in with the characters and school of Girls of the Hamlet Club (Chinnor in Oxfordshire is the nearest match for the village that can be construed from clues in the text), Oxenham uses the real abbey ruins of Cleeve abbey at Washford, Somerset for the descriptions in the book. With one or two exceptions, mainly due to wishful thinking on the part of the author, the descriptions in the book can be followed on the ground at Cleeve.
