Architectural woodcut border on t.p. Initials. Nine cuts appear in the 4th pt. of book 1, and 7 in book 4, "De fornacibus construendis." Of those that appear in the 4th pt. of book 1, five reappear in book 4, one of them twice.

Device of Matthias Apiarius (Biener) appears on last p. See P. Heitz, Basler Büchermarken, 123 (there assigned to Samuel Apiarius).

Binding: old (but not original) calf over pasteboard. Spine tooled in gold, with title on black label: ALCHEMIA / GEBRI / ARABIS_[symbol]. Edges sprinkled red. Centered on front pastedown is circular bookplate of Oskar Göschen, dated 1865. There are numerous annotations throughout, in at least 3 hands, and in brown ink, black ink, and black and red pencil. Shield incorporated in border of t.p. has crescent and 6-pointed star in black ink. Immediately below date on t.p. is inscribed: Amicus orbi / summe!
