First Sentence
"Long thirty years before the First War of Independence took place in 1857, an unknown warrior named Surendra Sai waged an uncompromising guerilla warfare in and around Sambalpur against the mighty British power in 1827. He was captured in 1840 and sent to Hazaribagh jail where he was imprisoned till 1857. When the mutineers ransacked the Hazaribagh jail, he escaped and preferred to fight for the cause of his motherland Sambalpur by returning there. Again with the help of his compatriots, most of whom were zamindars of tribal origin, he waged war against the British rule for long seven years till his capture in 1864 due to trechery. His long struggle in two phases from 1827 to 1840 and from 1857 to 1864 had created in the minds of the common people innumerable tales of valour and sacrifice. He was sent to Asirgarh fort near Nagpur in 1864 where he was confined till his death. Very few people in India and even in Orissa know about this great warrior, who spent almost 38 years in jail and 19 years in jungle warfare for the cause of his motherland. His bicentennial birth anniversary is being celebrated in 2009 which is the right occasion to remember Sirendra Sai, the invincible warrior, born revolutionary and a great son of India."
